Uses For Your Old Windows
When we remove your old windows, unless you ask us to leave them behind, we take them to the landfill because often they’re beat-up from the sun or cracked from hail. What’s more, the IGU’s (Insulated Glass Units) are often blown. When an IGU is blown, a window no longer has the insulation properties or performance it once had.
That said, if you would like us to leave your old windows with you, just ask. Some folks like to save old windows to use in a shed they’re building or to make a mini-greenhouse with or to decorate their craft room with. There are hundreds of ways you can repurpose an old window. Below are a few ideas. Old wood windows are particularly sought after. You might even be able to sell your old windows.
If you personally don’t have a use for your old windows, someone else might. In an attempt to keep them out of the landfill, ask your local NextDoor or other social media. You could also offer them to a local craft or repurpose store. For example, Magpies Market in Fort Collins might be interested.
Mini Greenhouse
A mini greenhouse can be as small as you like. Some also only have a glass window on the top and wooden sides. A mini greenhouse is a great way to extend the life of, or growing season for, just about any garden vegetable, such as a tomato plant. One can also be used to protect a plant early in the growing season. For example, if your area is expected to get a cold snap or freeze after you’ve planted something, you could place your mini greenhouse over said plant to help protect it.
In a Shed
Shed’s usually don’t need insulation, but you want some light in it to see what you’re doing or find something. When building a shed, most don’t want to spend the money on a new, even effordable window. Most don’t think it’s worth it. It’s just a shed, after-all. If a window’s glass isn’t broken or missing, a shed might be a good way to repurpose an old, worn-out window. You can also install a window in an existing shed. There are many YouTube videos on how do to just that.
Decoration
Decorating with an old window is also a common idea. If the glass is still in one piece, one option is to paint it with chalkboard paint and write on it with chalk. For your home or craft room, you can write words of wisdom. For your business, you could write the day’s special. If the glass is broken or damaged, carefully remove it and you could attach a photo behind it or in it. One could use an old window for a garage or craft room cabinet door.
